Bollywood

Sunday evening, we went back into Mumbai for an evening of Bollywood Dancing and Dinner. As mentioned in a previous quote, the two things people from Mumbai are crazy about is cricket and movies. Bollywood comes from combining the words Bombay and Hollywood. Our tour guide, Ragini, claimed that Bollywood is the largest film industry in the world, bigger even than Hollywood. As we drove to the theater along Marine Drive, we enjoyed some nice views of the Arabian Sea.

The Bollywood show was in a small, intimate theater and was done for our group only. It was a good demonstration that gave us an idea of what Bollywood is. There was a story that was told through singing and dancing, with intermittent explanations by a couple of narrators. It was a bit amateurish, but then again, that’s what Bollywood is. It was not the best acting or dancing, but was still very entertaining and enjoyable.

After the show, we were treated to a dinner at the Khyber Hotel.

The dinner was Punjabi, which means food that the Punjab area is known for, mostly grilled and spicy. Punjab is an area in the northwestern part of India. At the dinner, we sat with Tracy and Duncan from Seattle. We enjoyed good conversation with them. The menu for the dinner was set, and it was served in quite an unusual manner. The servers would come to your table, and with a pair of tongs, they would pick up a small serving of something and place it on your plate. Then shortly after, they would come around again with another serving of something else using tongs. So we ate a few bites at a time, rather than an entire meal at once. Many of the dishes they served were chicken. When we asked what it was, they would say chicken something or other. With their accents we never understood the something or other part. After awhile we quit asking. But we kept getting a piece of chicken of some kind on our plate served with tongs. Most of it was very good. There was also some fried rice with vegetables. For dessert we had an unknown something or other and Indian ice cream. The Indian ice cream was served in little chunks and tasted kind of like coffee flavored ice cream. It was excellent.

Between the show and the dining, and making new friends, it was an enjoyable evening.
